"If anyone obeys his word, Gods love is truly made complete in Him. This is how we know we are in him. Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did."I John 2:5,6
Our love for God manifests through abiding in him by obeying what he instructs us. In the long by-gone days, we walked like the pagan, who do not fear God but walk in the ways pleasing to themselves. The Scripture says that you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagan choose to do (1 Peter 4:3). We never cared about anyone or even if we did care, our motives were not right. We were always craving for more. If a benefactor had to bequeath the whole world to us, yet we would be wanting something more. This is the human tendency. But Bible says the world and its desires pass way, but the man who does the will of God lives forever (I John 2:17). The Lord created us so that we may do the will of God in this earth and be qualified to receive the greatest treasure which he has kept in store for us in eternity.
Jesus says I am the light of the world. Obeying him helps us to walk in the light. Our lives will be transformed into a lighthouse which can guide great ships to the harbor. We will be able to guide those who backslide and those who live a aimless life. Thus, walking in the light makes us love one another and bear their burden. Hatred has no part in us. 1 John 2:9 says any one who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness. If you do not love your neighbor but give alms and do charity, it will not be pleasing in the sight of God. Hatred only reveals our inane character which is still not crucified on the cross and make us walk in the darkness, and there is no truth in us.
To abide in Him, we have to be a model for others and not a stumbling block. Apostle Paul in Romans 14:13 says, let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in a brothers way. The sin of Adam made us an imperfect image before God. The image which we lost through Adam was regained by Jesus Christ. As we attempt to become like him, let us not judge and condemn others, instead help them to walk in the light.
To abide in Him, we should refrain from sinning. John the disciple of Jesus says no one who continues to sin has either see him or known him (I John 3:6). Ask God to help you not to sin. Make a conscious effort to flee from the place of sin. Do not ever turn back. Meditate on the words of God and ask him to make us more like Him. Set a separate time for prayer. Because abiding in Him is a continual process which ends only in eternity as Apostle John clearly says continue in him, so that when He appears, we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming (I John 2:28).
