"Houses and riches are an inheritance from fathers. But a prudent wife is from the Lord." Proverbs 19:14
Marriages are made in heaven but a happy family is made in earth. To achieve this every member of the family plays an important role. Yet the success of marriage is weighed down mostly upon the heads (I mean, both husband and wife) of the family. To play their part befittingly, Bible provides basic guidelines to husband and wife.
The unmarried people anxiously wait for a life partner with whom they can share their joy, love, dreams, goals and future. At the same time, the married yearn for the fulfillment of their dreams in their spouse. The Bible says, a father can leave house and riches to their offspring. But he cannot guarantee a happy life to his son or daughter. The divorce rate is increasing without bounds especially in the developed countries. This mania has not left the under-developed countries either. Bible says what God had united should not be separated by men. If so, how is it possible to live with a grudging wife or chauvinistic men. Therefore, it is in the hands of husband and wife to forgive the faults and learn to accept their spouse.
Before choosing a spouse, one should wait upon the Lord and ask him to reveal the partner to you. Because God knows your likes and dislikes and whatever he provides for you will the best in your life.
Characteristics of a wife
A description of a godly conduct appropriate for Christian woman. A neat outward appearance is proper yet emphasis should be put on the adornment of the heart. A beautiful heart will express itself in gentle deeds of kindness and a quiet spirit of co-operation. Such beauty is incorruptible, not passing away with age. This is the kind of beauty that God values (I Peter 3:36).
A wife can either make or break a house. A wise woman builds her house, but the foolish pulls it down with her hands (Proverbs 14:1). A woman should learn to use utter restraint in family matters. She should know how to forgive the faults of her husband and children.
An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, but she who causes shame is like rotteness in his bones (Proverbs 12:4). A wife who does not conduct herself well in speech and deeds before others will be a shame to her husband.
Husbands will trust a prudent wife (Proverbs 31:1012). She should be loyal to him in her heart as well as in all monetary matters. Lavish spending without the knowledge of husband and putting him to debt is highly condemnable.
A good wife does him good and not evil all the days of her life. Always do good to him no matter who he is. Never think evil for him even in your wildest of dreams (Proverbs 31:12).
The Bible does not encourage a wife to be separated from her husband (I Corinthians 7:10).
She should not be idle (Proverbs 31:27).
She is praised by her children and husband (Proverbs 31:28).
Characteristics of a husband
A Christian husband should try to understand his wife, respect her, and give high priority to her well-being. He is to be considerate in his requests of her. She may be physically weaker, but both are heirs together of Gods grace that gives life. Discord hinders our prayers (I Peter 3:7).
Be compassionate show love and be tenderhearted and courteous (I Peter 3:8).
Finally, to lead a happy life, one must live in peace with himself and with everyone. Instead of trusting in our own wisdom ask God to teach you how to bring up your children in godly ways (Psalms 143:10). This will make them as a good members of the society and family. In effect, marriage is the culmination of two hearts, minds and bodies to produce godly generation.
