"I will do marvels, such as have not been done in all the earth " Exodus: 34:10 (KJV)
Vanity of vanities

"Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, All is vanity." Ecclesiastes 12:14

Vanity is defined as "uselessness", "non-existence" or "futility". The life we live in this world is considered vanity according to King Solomon. If everything is vain, then there will be no meaning to life. A point to be stressed here is that, in Christ Jesus, we have a meaning to life for which we constantly struggle to achieve.

Days of man can be compared to the grass which lies on the roadside. Today, they look fresh and beautiful and blossom; alas! when you look at the them tomorrow they are no more. Even the place where they stood know them any more (Psalms 103:15). Man in all his glory boast about himself as long as he lives. On his death, everything he has acquired so far is no use to him. None think of him anymore excluding the few who are deeply affected by him. Such is the end of any man. All his labor are considered to be futile to him. It is more like a smoke that passes away leading no trace of its identity (Psalms 102:3). The life of man is also compared to shadow that declines (Psalms 102:11). No one has the power to control the shadow. We cannot ask the shadow to be with us always. So also you cannot expect to stick on to your life forever.

Many consider themselves to be immortals while they live on this earth. They plan and lead a life boasting about themselves and forget that there is a God above them who watches their every move. We should be rightly reminded that it is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed (Lamentations 3:22).

When the doom looms over you, and when threatened by your enemies; tell yourselves that God is in control of your life. As the Psalmist says "My times are in your hand. Deliver me from the hand of my enemies. And from those who persecute me" (Psalms 31:15). No one can touch you or take away your life if you walk in the way of God. You need not be afraid of the enemies.

Job says our days are pre-determined. We can neither lengthen nor shorten it. God in His abundant wisdom has created everything beautiful in His time. Therefore, it is given for every man to eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor. It is the gift of God (Ecclesiastes 3:11). Even to be merry you need the grace of God otherwise you will not be able to eat the food you like. It will be dictated by the doctor who has diagnosed you to have diseases in the world replete with all sorts of diseases. If this is the kind of life we live, is it not high time that we started thinking of God. The Bible says, God has created us a little lower than the angel. He has crowned him with glory and honor and set him master over all the creations. Do we behave like masters or like slaves. Machines have made us slaves to them. Drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, pornography, etc. have made slaves of man. Why is this happening? The answer is simple. Man forgot his creator and started looking for pleasures through stealth which has doomed him for destruction.

This life we live is vanity. During this life, man is busy searching pleasure and putting up a show before everyone and ultimately deceiving himself. He heaps up riches not knowing what would happen of it after his death (Psalms 39:6).

Those who live in Christ need not lose hope. The conclusion of the whole matter is fear God and keep his commandments. For this is man’s all. For God will bring every work into judgement including every secret thing whether good or evil (Ecclesiastes 12:14). Therefore the Lord expects you to fear Him and keep His commandments. The life that we lead here does not end with this world. There is a life after death which we may be spending either in heaven or hell. Now, it is your time to choose. For it is appointed unto me once to die and after this the judgement (Hebrews 9:27).

What is your choice? Heaven or hell?

He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still (Revelation 22:11).

Jesus says, Behold I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be (Revelation 22:12).

May the Lord help you to make the right choice.
